Protection impairments occur when fire protective systems, such as sprinklers, waterspray, carbon dioxide, fire alarm,
or supervisory equipment, are shut off or otherwise taken out of service completely or in part. When this happens, these
protective systems cannot provide the intended protection. While it is recognized that impairments are necessary during
maintenance, renovation, or new construction, or because of equipment failure, it must be understood that a facility is in
jeopardy from fire during an impairment. Therefore, for most enterprises an Impairment Management Program is
desirable.
