Mass tourism to the area has affected water resources, increased pollution, contributed to local flooding and has put pressure on the island's roads and transport. The water quality of coastal areas has deteriorated which has contributed to the destruction of coral reefs.
The lifting of the hotel ban has seen an increase in construction and the building of hotels in popular areas along the coast. These areas are very sensitive environments. In some areas, rows of concrete walls have been constructed along beaches to protect them. In some cases, this has resulted in tourists going elsewhere.
Inland agricultural areas are also being affected by the building of more guest houses in rural areas. This has led to local water being redirected away from rice paddies and used for tourism instead.
Local animals like birds and monkeys are also affected. Animals have become more predatory as they now beg for food from tourists or steal from them. They have become more aggressive towards humans. Tourists are now warned about these behaviours.
