The preliminary Italian experience with the MitraClip device indi-cates that percutaneous edge-to-edge mitral valve repair is a feasible approach that may be accomplished with favourable early
outcomes. Until more experience can be gained and indications
can be defined, this new technology could apply for a high-risk
population in whom no viable option for mitral repair is available.
Whether mitral valve repair by percutaneous clip implantation may
represent a preferable alternative to surgery or medical therapy
alone is currently undefined and needs to be proven by specifically
designed randomized trials
