Lesson VOC 51
Task: Use an ironing board and iron
Prerequisites: ADT 3, COG 11, SEN 12, SEN 13, VOC 5
Concept: Considering the potential for possible harm via burns to the student, it is very important that the student be skilled and responsive to directions given by a supervisor (see prerequisite VOC 5). The main teaching effort involves motor imitation by the student (see prerequisite COG 11). In this sample lesson, only one type of clothing (pants) has been chosen. Ironing other types of clothing can be taught in a similar manner. Although this activity is directed toward success in a work setting, it obviously can have application to a home setting as well.
Behavioral Objective: When presented with an iron and requested to "please iron these pants," the student will, under supervision, plug in and turn on an iron and iron at least five pairs of pants to an 80% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Two irons, two ironing boards, at least five pairs of pants, and at least five clothing hangers.
Task Analysis:
1. Demonstrate to the student the processes involved in plugging in the iron, setting it to medium heat, and holding the iron. Guide the student to imitate holding the iron in a safe, incontrol manner.
2. Continue Step 1, adding having the student perform motor imitation of the movement of the iron. (Nate. At this point, the student's iron remains off.)
3. Physically prompt the student through the process of plugging in and turning on the iron.
4. Demonstrate the placement of one leg of the pants on the ironing board, folding the pants to that the crease is touching the board. Prompt the student tea perform this task until only verbal prompts arc needed.
5. Continue Step 4, physically guiding the student in the actual ironing of the pant leg.
6. Continue Step 5, adding the ironing of the other side of the leg and per-forming the wane process for the other leg.
7. Continue Step 6, adding the use of the ironing board end to iron the top portion of the pants.
8. Continue Step 7, reducing physical assistance and changing the prompt to imitation of your demonstration. In this step, you and the student should each have an ironing hoard and iron that can be easily seen by both parties. Refining the student's skill can be addressed at this point.
9. Continue Step 8, adding the placement of the ironed pants on a hanger.
10. Continue Step 9, reducing the imitative prompt. Even at this level, some form of supervision should be maintained.
