One of Bellichick’s primary qualities is focus. He stresses more than often to his players
and coaching staff. Whether it was in 2007, when the Patriots went undefeated through the
regular season or even in past seasons when they have not, the message from Belichick and his
players is the same: “we tackle our jobs one project at a time.” That mindset is how Belichick
earned his status as being grouchy, uptight, and brash. Some people have scoffed at how harsh
Belichick is with the media. While the Patriots were going through their undefeated season,
Belichick wouldn’t buy into the media’s hype of proclaiming the Patriots as the greatest team
ever. Isaacson discussed when the Jobs came back to Apple; they were in the midst of producing
a random array of computers and different versions of the Macintosh. Jobs let things play out
before he had enough. He told the team of producers to scrap their ideas and make four
computers. By getting Apple to focus on making just four computers, he saved the company.
Isaacson used a quote from his interview with Jobs that really hit home on the comparison
between the two. “Deciding on what not to do is as important as deciding what to do.” I relate
this to the instances where Bill Belichick had to decide on when to get rid of players and when
not to sign players because of chemistry issues and/or they aren’t a good fit for the team.
