The family is often left behind at the destination in an almost ‘reverse sojourner’ pattern of migration, with the husband, and sometimes the wife as well, returning to maintain or take up jobe in Asia. Leaving the family at the destination rather than the origin appears to rep-resent a new form of mobility, one found among peoples other than the Chinese. Chinse cases of transnational household may be found among Malaysians and Singaporeans in London and Perth; and Hong Kong and Taiwanese in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Sydney or Auckland.
