Strategies to attenuate the negative impact of disparities in
social determinants on health status are as complex as the
determinants themselves. A full analysis of published strategies
is beyond the scope of this discussion, but a brief overview
is necessary to the conceptualization of the role of
nursing. Dahlgren & Whitehead (2007) outline a strategic
approach to health equity for global application. Their model
provides a helpful means by which to conceptualize political
and social interventions to address the social determinants of
health and has been utilized by organizations such as the
National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and
TB Prevention in creating strategic plans at the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2008. Dahlgren
