Some research has acknowledged the importance of power relationships by using the concept of sensegiving to illustrate how sensemaking is shaped by attempts to influence how others perceive and understand the world. Fiss and Zajac (2006), for instance, found that theories of sensemaking need to be complemented by a better understanding of sensegiving, which Gioia and Chittipeddi (1991), (p. 442) defined as the process of attempting to influence the sensemaking and meaning construction of others.
