The Piccolo Latte a favorite amoungst those coffee industry reps who have to drink alot fo coffee on their daily routines. The piccolo is normally presentented as a doppi ristretto (20ml) topped with silky latte milk. I drink them because in my job I get offered lots of coffee. Most coffee's in the Australian cafe world a milk based so I have to try the coffee's I sample with milk in them. hence if I had full milk based coffees I would be a fat bastard.
Piccolo means small latte. single shots a fine as longs as the milks is smooth and the coffee is extracted right. to get a rossetta on a piccolo is quite a challenge and I commend the Barista that can pull one off. I ask for piccolo's every where I go in Australia and I find the drink is still very Sydney based. I get many a strange look when I ask the question and get looked apon as being a smart ass for asking for what I like. Some times I end up behind the machine demonstrating what a piccolo looks like. A Piccolo should be served in a small 4 oz latte glass (espresso glass) this gives the drink its own identity
The best piccolo's I have had are at Toby's Wooloomooloo, Danks st Depo Waterloo, Campos Newtown. In Melbourne The Wall Balaclava, Adelaide Double shot espresso.. Brisbane Cafe Modena in Adelaide street and in Regional NSW Buzz Cafe Port Macquarie.
Next time you go on a cafe crawl test out the barista and see what you get.
The Piccolo has its place in the coffee world and should not be put in the macchiato slot.
