Basedon the findings of theKaufert et al. (1998) study,memberswere askedto payclose
attention to andcollect informationon the portrayal of olderwomen, aging,andmenopause
in magazines, newspapers, and on television. According to the Roy (Roy & Andrews,
1999) adaptationmodel, body image refers to “howthe body looks to oneself and howone
feels abouthowthe bodylooks andfunctions” (p. 388).Themedia informationcollectedby
the group members facilitated discussions about factors influencing body image. The
group discussed howthere aremany coming-of-age television shows andmovies, but relatively
few change-of-life movies. Themembers, in fact,were unable to name one popular
change-of-lifemovie.Group members also discussed how today’s cultureworships looking
and feeling young and fears growing old. Themembers also explored the power of the
media and how the media influenced how they felt about themselves.
