For the STC. Song assigned was 'Friendship' by Okazaki Ritsuko. This is set some time after Ratio and Birthday left Facultas. I'm not sure how old they were when they left, but they're both twelve here. c:
Ratio's eyes widened when he spotted his friend and playmate in the doorway. "Why didn't you dress for the weather? It's cold and snowy…" A frown creased his thin lips.
"Eh, you worry too much," said the blonde with a dismissive wave of his hand. Unlike his worrywart friend, he didn't have a scarf or gloves on, just a thick coat and hat. He started down the sidewalk with Ratio next to him. "It's nice to have someone else to walk with, ne?"
The dark-haired boy smiled and nodded. "Especially with the snow coming down." He tilted his head back and stared up at the night sky. "It's pretty."
Birthday just watched his friend's expression with an uncanny grin. It excited him to see Ratio so excited; nothing honestly made him happier. "Hey, uh, Ratio?"
The other boy turned away from the sky and focused on his friend instead. "Hm?"
"Well, I…Just uh, wanted to thank you for inviting me along," Birthday muttered with his eyes cast down to his feet. He gave his friend a sideways glance. "I usually don't go to stuff like this."
"Neither did I," Ratio continued in a quiet voice. "Not until I met you, that is." He blushed when Birthday's head snapped up and he stared at him with disbelief. "Ah, well, you know! It's because I…That is, I've never had a close friend before you came along."
Birthday's enormous grin returned. "We'll make it a thing from now on! Every year we'll go together!" His nose twitched and he stopped for a moment, sneezing. "Ugh. Freaking sinuses…"
"See? I was right," Ratio explained with a sigh and removed his scarf. "C-Come here a second."
Curious and snot-nosed, Birthday inched closer to him. A surprised squeak escaped him when Ratio wrapped half of his scarf around his neck, tightening it around the two of them.
"How are we gonna walk?" he asked, looking a little feverish suddenly.
They were practically cheek-to-cheek. Ratio didn't answer him because he had no ideas.
"We're gonna miss the tree lighting if we just sit here…" he said at length.
Fighting against his better judgment, Birthday faced forward and grabbed his companion's hand in his. "T-This'll work, right? That way we can still walk without the scarf coming undone…" His face glowed under the light of the streetlamp. He strode ahead and pulled Ratio along until the other boy finally adjusted his strides to match Birthday's.
Yokohama Central Square was packed to capacity with spectators for the annual tree lighting. Most of those in attendance were couples, piling on the embarrassment for the two boys. Birthday abruptly halted before they reached the tree.
"Look!" He pointed to a vendor stall and dragged Ratio behind him. "Hot cocoa sounds really good right about now. Ne, Ratio?"
"How many?" asked the vendor with a smile.
Birthday grinned and held up his fingers. "Two!" He dug in his pockets and handed the lady the last of his allowance, unbeknownst to Ratio. Afterwards, he led Ratio to an empty bench in front of the tree, and they sat down to enjoy their cocoa.
"How much do I owe you?" Ratio piped up after a few minutes of blowing on his beverage.
The blonde laughed. "Tch. You don't owe me anything! It's my treat!"
"That's hardly fair…" complained the dark-haired boy with a grimace. He involuntarily scooted closer to his friend for warmth. His eyes lit up. "I know! I'll buy the cocoa next year! How's that?"
Birthday leaned back and bobbed his head. "Fair enough!" He lifted the Styrofoam cup to his lips despite Ratio's gasp and wordless warning. His pupils shrank as the scalding cocoa singed his tongue. "Ga-ha! Holy crap, that's hot!"
"Idiot…" Ratio suppressed a chuckle and kept blowing on his cocoa. "You're not supposed to suck it all down at once. It's meant to be enjoyed slowly."
"Now he thells meh…" garbled the blonde with his tongue sticking out, trying to cool it some.
Lights flashed around the square suddenly. The tree sparkled against the softly falling snowflakes, light danced off its tinsel and decorations, awing everyone present. Couple hugged and kissed, whispering to each other.
"W-What?" stammered Birthday when he met Ratio's determined gaze. The other boy scooted closer and closer until he ran out of bench. His blue eyes narrowed some and he leaned over to peck Birthday on the cheek, leaving him stunned.
"T-Thank you," he said in a small voice. "For going with me, I mean. For being my friend when no one else would…I…!" He sucked in a deep breath when Birthday suddenly returned the sweet gesture, pressing his chilly lips against Ratio's forehead.
"That shut you up," he mumbled and sat back, admiring the tree. "What? I don't want you spoiling the mood by acting all weird and depressing. Smile, ne?" He flashed a toothy grin at the other boy for emphasis.
Ratio gave a small laugh and smiled back at his friend. He felt something twine around his fingers and realized what it was when Birthday's grin widened. He squeezed back and laid his head on the blonde's shoulder.
"Merry Christmas, Birthday.
