Part of my family is from the country of Greece in southern Europe. Every time a birthday rolls around, we have a huge get together and do traditional things such as dancing, drinking, plate breaking, and enjoying life.
One of the most common traditions you will see performed by Greeks at a major event is Greek dancing. It's a custom dating hundreds of years back, when it was used to train soldiers.
At my birthday parties we always dance our favorite dances. My family is from the region of Crete in Greece, where we all add different parts and styles to the dance, adding up for quite an amazing time.
Another traditional thing to do is drink and break plates. It's customary for most Greeks to have a glass of wine with each meal, and at parties we don't disappoint. We'll break out our aged and best tasting Greek red wine, or, in Greek, "krasi." We enjoy breaking plates as a sign of joy and happiness.
The biggest thing we do, and possibly the most Greek, is enjoy life. We take our time to the fullest at parties, chatting with friends and family and simply enjoying the time we spend with them. We never shy away from a conversation because that would be rude and a sign of disrespect.
What more could we need at a Greek birthday party than dancing, drinking, and spending time with friends and family?
