CHINA TO HOST US WOMEN’S OPEN SECTIONAL QUALIFYING FOR FIRST TIME
2014/05/13In recognition of its growing importance in world golf, China will serve as one of the four international sites outside of America to host a US Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying on May 19.With the format requiring 36 holes over the CGA Nanshan International Training Center Garden Course in Shandong province, in total 38 players from five countries and Chinese Taipei are competing in the China leg aiming to secure a spot in the field for the 69th US Women’s Open. It will be contested June 19-22 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club No. 2 in North Carolina, a week after the famed club hosts the men’s US Open.China, England, Japan and South Korea, along with 20 sites in the United States, are serving as qualifying sites for the championship that boasts a prize purse of US$3.25 million, the largest in women’s golf.Daniel B. Burton, USGA vice president and chairman of the Championship Committee, said having sectional qualifiers in China and other countries reflected the global expansion of the game. It also provided more opportunities for the game’s top players the chance to play in the premier championship in women’s golf.“Sectional qualifying is a crucial part of bringing this most democratic of championships to the world’s elite players,” he said. “With the cooperation of our partners, both domestic and international, we look forward to welcoming the best players from across the globe to Pinehurst.”World No. 1 Inbee Park goes into the tournament as the defending champion as the South Korean won last year’s championship in Southampton, New York, marking the fifth time in the past six years her countrymen have raised the trophy.China No. 1 Feng Shanshan has already qualified for the tournament in being one of the top 70 players on US LPGA money list and as the winner of the 2012 LPGA Championship.
