categories. Most authors used the words ‘‘cure’’ or
‘‘curative’’ to describe treatment alternatives, and
cure was often used when describing its absence as a
realistic option, as in the statement ‘‘no hope for cure.’’
Live longer (‘‘live longer’’). The goal of living longer
was identified in 89 articles, and a set of related
phrases usually described this goal: ‘‘prolonging life,’’
‘‘extending life,’’ ‘‘prolonging survival,’’ and ‘‘preserving
life at all costs.’’ This goal category also included
references to remission of disease, preventing relapse
of disease, and altering disease trajectory.
