2. Protect coastal wetlands and accommodate sea
level change. Impacts of sea level rise can be
ameliorated with acquisition of inland buffer
zones to provide an opportunity for habitats and
wildlife to migrate inland. Setback lines for
coastal development can be effective at establishing
zones for natural coastal migration based
on projected sea level rise. Storm surge should be
considered in establishing buffer zones and
setback boundaries. In other cases, restoration
of natural hydrology could facilitate sediment
accretion and building of deltaic coastal
wetlands.
