Accounting educators have come under pressure in recent years to reorient curricula away from the rules-based transmission of content and toward the development of teaching and learning approaches that encourage students to actively construct their own knowledge and practice using new skills and concepts (Albrecht & Sack, 2000; Davis, 1996; Mundell & Pennarola, 1999). In addressing such demands, various challenges, including resource constraints, persist (Cleaveland & Larkins, 2004; Frederickson & Pratt, 1995). The Department of Accounting and Business Information Systems at the University of Melbourne has responded to this changing context through the design and set-up of the MarlinaLS system, which utilises on-line technology to promote active learning.
