Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa has emerged as one of the most buzzed about movies at the Toronto Film Festival. An existential cartoon that some critics have called solipsistic and misanthropic, it’s a continuation of the brainy style Kaufman developed in his screenplays for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
BBC Culture reporter Emma Jones chooses Anomalisa as her favourite film from the festival, while critic Owen Gleiberman goes in a different direction for his top pick. And both tell Tom Brook which actor they think is guaranteed to receive an Oscar nomination for his startling performance in one of the festival’s breakout films.
