If you weren’t aware, there was a huge social media outbreak about a dress. The picture showed the dress that the girl in this ad is wearing and people were asked what they saw: Did they see black and blue or did they see white and gold? Here, the message of the ad is clear. Physical abuse is no laughing matter and the victim is not the one who abuses, but the one who is being abused.
For starters, the dress calls the most attention. If you were on social media at the time the picture of the dress came out then you recognize it right away. The reading “Why is it so hard to see black and blue” is big enough to call the person in to continue to analyze the ad. The words beneath could be slightly larger than what they are currently, but serves a central message to the public. The ad is very informative without providing much information at all. Of course, the ad appeals to the public’s feelings which is known as pathos. Yes, there is also some ethos and logos in this ad, but pathos is the one that draws it in. You see bruises on the girl’s body and start to feel upset about it. Then you read the words on the side and your feelings continuously get put on the spot. What if that happened to me? What if that happened to someone I know? What if it is happening right now?
Having the dark background is also an excellent use of space. They could have left it white like I assume it would be originally, but instead they made it a grey color. When you think of gray, you think of sad and gloomy. This sad and gloomy feeling is how the people who made this ad want you to feel. They want you to realize abuse is sad and gloomy.
