Bullfighting is an ancient sport with well-established traditions. Each bullfight is made up of three distinct parts, or "terceros." In the first, the bullfighters' assistants will test the competitiveness of the bull by waving capes. Then the "Picadores" will come on horses and try to stick the bull with lances while "Banderillos" stick small ribbons into the bull. Then the matador will appear, daring the bull to run at him as close as possible while passing a large cape over it. Then he will stick a blade called an "espalda" into the back of its neck and hopefully kill the bull cleanly. In the crowd, gentlemen and ladies dressed in their Sunday best shout "ole" as music plays and wine is consumed.
