Putting on shoes involves fine-motor, gross-motor, and proprioceptive (knowing where an item is located in space even without visual cues) skills. In some cases, from an adaptive perspective, finding and keeping track of where the shoes are is often the first step to performing this skill. For some students, the act of shoelace Piing requires more fine-motor skills than are reasonable. In those cases, alternatives such as shoes with adhesive straps are fine in that the desired outcome—putting on the shoes—is accomplished.
