Antimicrobial andantioxidantactivities,phenolcontent,and -amylase inhibitoryeffectsofalocalvari-
ety ofbetelleaveswereevaluated.Theeffectsofvarioussolvents(methanol,ethanol,acetone,andethyl
acetate) onphenolsandantioxidantactivitieswerealsostudied.Methanolandethanol(90%)extracts
showed maximumphenoliccontents(205.2and202.9mgGAE/g,respectively).Maximumflavonoid
contents weredeterminedusing90%acetone(82.5mgCE/g),andthehighestinhibitionpercentageof
2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicalwasexhibitedby90%ethanol(percentinhibition,94%). -Amylase
activity assayshowedthat -amylase inhibitoryactivitieswerepositivelycorrelatedwiththetotalphe-
nolic contentofethanolandmethanol.Consideringantimicrobialactivities,wefoundthatallofthe
Gram-positive bacteriaandGram-negativebacteriawereinhibitedbybetelleafextractexcept Pseudomonas
aeruginosa. Ourresultscouldprovideabasisoffuturestudiesonbetelleavesusedinfoodand
pharmaceutical applications.
