demonstrated that a sustained depletion of Wolbachia is necessary for killing of adult O. ochengi, and it seems likely that the absence of these bacteria in microfilariae is also required for a transmission blocking effect. in our earlier report, we conservatively suggested that a monthly regimen of doxycycline every third month might be needed to suppress rebounds in Wolbachia to prevent re-population of the dog's blood with microfilariae that would be able to develop normally in mosquitoes and L3 that would complete their development in susceptible vertebrate host
