Farmers claimed that elephants ate
any crop-species encountered, except for chili pepper (Capsicum
spp.), while other wildlife species were more selective: bushbuck
mainly fed on cocoyam and cassava leaves, and young cocoa trees.
Squirrels targeted cocoa seeds and palm fruits. Cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus [Temminck, 1827]) mainly fed on crop saplings,
i.e., maize, cassava, and yam while civets (C. civetta, N. binotata)
were reported to feed on palm fruits, bananas, cassava, and young
plantain plants.
