I have included interludes, a term used by Beers to describe short essays (2007)
before each chapter to develop the contexts and time frame for my research questions and
to make the accounts of my research and teaching experiences engaging to the reader.
These short essays, similar to vignettes, give the reader "a day in the life" of the
participants; myself and one section of undergraduate students in a literacy course
focused on teaching reading methods in grades 4- 8 (Miles & Huberman, 1994, p. 81).
These interludes provide a transition between my thoughts and reflections and the
academic writing that composes a dissertation.
