Most faculties and joint administration departments rely
heavily on travel. Most of this is air travel with high emission
intensities. The introduction of video conferencing is one promising
way to reduce the need for travel. At NTNU, video conferencing
equipment is made available in several locations ranging in
capacity from 10 to 150 people. Clearly, this could especially be
a good option for meetings and guest lectures. The CFs of equipment
and consumables together form the largest contributors to
the CF of NTNU. The Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Natural
Science have especially high contributions in these categories. In
some cases, such as the purchase of office computers, food, and
copy paper, environmental information, such as Life Cycle Assessments
(LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), of
consumer products is becoming more widespread and can be
applied in green purchasing strategies. We do not expect environmental
information to be widely available at a more granular level
for more specific scientific equipment and supplies. Actions here
could instead focus more on the actual use of products to ensure to
maximize lifetime on products and minimize use and waste
generation of consumables.
