Foundation of cultural competence. Development of
cultural competence requires a strong foundation in liberal
education (AACN, 2008b) that (a) provides the knowledge
and understanding of common problems, experiences, and
traditions that enhance students’ participation in a culturally
diverse global society, (b) stimulates commitment to
moral values and ethical behavior, (c) develops an appreciation
of a shared and diverse cultural heritage, and
(d) cultivates an awareness of the contemporary world and
its problems (Anderson, 2004). Knowledge of diverse values,
beliefs, and practices instills understanding of cultural
premises influencing health and illness experiences of different
groups
