Data Collection
The data collected consisted of two surveys and a graphic novel inventory. The surveys
were used in a quantitative as well as a qualitative manner to determine the students’ attitudes
toward reading and their level of interest in and familiarity with graphic novels. The assessment
inventory was used as qualitative data to determine specific features of graphic novels that
appeal to or turn away students. The detailed interviews were evaluated in a qualitative matter to
collect details for male and female interest in regard to graphic novels. This enabled the
researcher to specifically articulate the key features of graphic novels that appeal to students.
