Adult study participants were psychiatric outpatients 18–65 years of age with nonpsychotic major depression, without a lifetime history of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or schizoaffective disorder, and without a current substance use dis- order. Patients with other psychiatric conditions or with medical conditions were included unless any of the study medications were contraindicated.
