Physicochemical water parameters
The ranges and averages of the water quality parameters are shown in fig. 2 for the 2008 and 2009 cycles. With few exceptions, these values remained within the optimal ranges for shrimp culture.The salinity at Morón decreased to 2.5 ppt during the 2008 cycle,and the salinity at Reynosa decreased to 2.3-2.5 ppt during both cycles. The turbidity at Reynosa was lower than the optimal range(Fig. 2) during both of the cycles. The water quality characteristics
determined from the measurements taken in the mornings and evenings at Reynosa remained stable during the 2008 and 2009 cycles, even though the 2008 cycle included the summer–autumn months and the 2009 cycle included the spring–summer months(see Fig. 2 for details). During the 2008 cy
cle, the average DO measurements were the lowest for the mornings in November (3.3 mg/L)
and the highest for the evenings in September (9.5 mg/L). La Pesca showed the lowest and highest DO levels for mornings and evenings for November 2008. In the 2009 cycle, the lowest average values for the morning DO were measured at Morón (2.8 mg/L) and the highest at La Pesca (9.3mg/L). As shown in Fig. 2, the salinities were very similar at Reynosa and Morón for 2008; in the 2009 cycle, the salinity increased in July at Morón. The average pH remained higher at Reynosa than at the other farms, reaching 8.2 in 2008 and 8.3 for 2009 (Fig. 2).
