The initial distinction between psychological and
sociocultural adaptation was proposed and validated by Ward (1996). Psychological
adaptation largely involves one’s psychological and physical well-being, whereas sociocultural
adaptation refers to howw ell an acculturating individual is able to mange daily life
in the newcultur al context. Although conceptually distinct, the two are empirically related
to some extent (correlations between the two measures are in the .40 –.50 range).
