It could be argued that since the students were not
necessarily taught the subject, performing badly on
the issue is justifiable. It could also be argued that
since just one socioscientific issue was studied, any
conclusions drawn could be an overkill. Yet local
circumstances make knowledge about UVR an imperative.
The high UV indices in summer, the link
between UVR and immunosuppression, the high
HIV/AIDS infections, the high cost of ARV therapy
for developing countries, make knowledge on UVR
and its effect of utmost importance. There are other
issues like cataract, cancer, general skin damage that
are of lesser importance to the case of Botswana,
though cumulatively leading to a great burden on the
health system.
