Concentrations of phenol were measured spectrophotometrically
at 270 nm and phenol degradation intermediates
were measured by High Performance Liquid
Chromatography using an HPLC-Shimadzu, Model-10
AD apparatus, equipped with an integrator Model C-R7A
Chromatopac (Shimadzu). Detection was made at 210
nm with an UV-detector (SPD-MGA, Shimadzu). Separation
was achieved with a Reverse-Phase column
(C18 5 m Lichrosorb RP 18, 125×4.0 mm, Merck,
Darmstadt, Germany) and the operating conditions were
as follows: room temperature; mobile phase, 20 mM
H3PO4–MeOH–CH3CN (65:15:20, v/v/v); and 0.8 ml/min
flow rate.
