It has been shown that the cultivation of the fungus boundto a support materials resulted in higher extracellular enzyme production [37]. The poor performance exhibited by most car-riers is due to the diffusional limitation of the substrate andoxygen. Therefore, in order to overcome diffusional limitation, agitated systems with immobilized cell preparations remain an important alternative system. The support materials would ren-der protection which would prevent cell disintegration by agitationstresses. Our attempt to use scouring pad cubes as immobi-lization carrier for enhancing pectinase production by our newisolate A. niger HFD5A-1 seem to succeed, with 335.0% of incre-ment in enzyme production after optimization of immobilizedcells’ cultural conditions (11.05 U/mL) compared to free cells(2.54 U/mL). The results obtained from this study showed thatthere was markedly enhanced pectinase production by the immo-bilized cells compared to the free cells, although it may dependon the nature of the support material used for the immobiliza-tion.
