Women from the poorer segments of society are more likely
to have an unintended pregnancy than wealthier women for a
variety of reasons. Their young marriage age exposes them to
the risk of unintended pregnancy for more of their reproductive
years. More important, poor women are less likely to decide
independently about using contraception, and they may have
less access to family planning information and services. In Egypt,
pregnant women in the poorest fifth of the population are twice
as likely to report their pregnancy as unintended as those in the
wealthiest fifth (see Figure 4).
