- Remove material build-up so that chain engages properly with sprocket teeth. Consider the use of special sprockets.
- Replace chain and sprockets if necessary. If drive layout is compatible, sprockets can be reversed to provide a new and unused working surface.
-Adjust centers if possible or introduce a take-up system such as an idler sprocket. If allowable, shorten chain by one or more pitches.

- Remove or repair stiff links.
