Carbon is incorporated into living organisms primarily by plants through the process of photosynthesis. Plants transform carbon from the atmosphere (carbon dioxide) into biologically useful forms, like sugars and starches, that the plants themselves and animals can then use. Like water, carbon is cycled through ecosystems and is repeatedly transformed from inorganic forms, like atmospheric CO2, into organic forms within living organisms, and back again.
