We have focused our attention thus far on
understanding student behavior, from student
assessment to strategies for improving inappropriate
behavior. However, an equally important topic
concerns the teacher’s management style. That is,
how well do you as a teacher know your style of
teaching and your ability to interact with students?
Are you authoritarian in your approach to
teaching, more of an authoritative teacher, more
indifferent, or something of a laissez-faire style of
teacher? Understanding your profile increases your
ability to address inappropriate behavior before it
escalates into something more serious. Knowing
your limitations (that is, your level of tolerance of
certain behaviors) and your students facilitates your
capacity to de-escalate potentially problematic
situations.
