Because of concern over the effect on the environment of all these tourists, in 1991, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) was set up.
Its goal is to promote environmentally responsible travel to the Antarctic.
With over 100 members, this organization helps to make sure that tourism is controlled and causes a little damage as possible.
The number of tourists allowed on the ice is restricted to around 100 at a time.
There must be at least one guide for every 20 tourists, with between one and three landings per day, lasting no more than three hours each.
