Moreover (and crucially, in our view), this can and should be done without discarding the insights provided by concepts at higher levels of abstraction. For although the four sub-modes developed by Gibson and Horvath are designed to shed light on change within capitalism, it is impossible to understand the relations within each of them and the possibilities of change from one to another without identifying those relations as distinctively capitalist.
