One demonstration of this tendency was found in a study by Napolitan and Goethals(1979). Subjects had a discussion with a female "consultant" who was actually a Confederate of the experimenter , trained to act either very friendly or distinctly unfriendly. In some cases subjects thought the consultant's behavior was spontaneous, and in other cases they were told that she was practicing a friendly or unfriendly role as part of her training a consultant. Subjects who encountered forced friendly behavior thought the woman was just a friendly as this subjects who thought her friendliness was freely chosen. Similarly , subjects who knew the woman was forced to be unfriendly thought her to be just as unfriendly as this subjects who thought her unfriendliness was her own. That is, subjects totally ignores the constraints on the woman's behavior and believed her to be as friendly or unfriendly as she behaved on that occasion
