In the Republic of Korea (hereafter Korea), the entry of baby-boomers into old age is a social
policy issue. This is because Korea is aging faster than any other country as the "baby
boomers‟ grow older. In fact, the speed of aging in Korea is unprecedented in human history
taking only 18 years to double the aged population from 7 – 14% (least number of years) overtaking even Japan. The percentage of the elderly aged 65 and above increased from
7.2% in 2000 to 11.3% in 2010, and it is expected to rise to 14.0% by 2017 and 37.4% in
2050
