The field experiment was located in Dengjiapu State Rice
Cropping Farm, Yujiang County, Jiangxi province in southeast
China (N28150, E116550). The research site is representative of a
typical subtropical moist climate with an annual mean temperature
of about 17.6 C; a minimum monthly mean temperature of
5.9 C in January and a maximum monthly mean temperature of 30.0 C in July; an average of 269 frost-free days and a rainfall of 1727mm, about 50% of which falls from March to July. The studied soil was a loamy Fluvisol derived from river alluvial deposits, with
sand 339 g kg1, silt 378 g kg1and clay 283 g kg1. The field had been cultivated under double rice cropping system with winter fallow for over five decades. Rice stubble (50–100mm high) was incorporated by using different powered machines into soil for more than ten years. Before the establishment of this experiment, the soil contained 23.1 g kg1 of SOC, 1.64 g kg1 of total N, 139.0mgkg1 of alkali-hydrolysable N, 5.8mgkg1 of Olsen P, and
81.6mgkg1 of available K. Soil pH in water (1:2) was 4.94.
