Approximately, there are near to 300,000 plant species on earth and each individual plant is the host to one or more endophytes, and many of them may colonize certain hosts. It has been estimated that there may be as many as one million different endophytic fungal taxa, thus endophytes may be hyperdiverse (Petrini 1991, 2003, Huang et al. 2007). Endophytesmay produce a plethora of bioactive metabolites that may be involved in the host-endophyte relationship (Strobel 2003), and may serve as potential sources of novel natural products for exploitation in medicine, agriculture, and industry (Bacon & White 2000, Strobel & Daisy 2003)
