The new data center is built on a raised floor that allows better air circulation. Hundreds of
servers and other pieces of equipment create a lot of excess heat, and raised floor construction
allows for better circulation of air. New racks have chimneys that exhaust heat from high-density
computing environments. Air conditioners supply a constant stream of air that will maintain the
optimum temperature for computing equipment. Censors continually monitor humidity and keep
it at an optimal level. This was an improvement over the Libraries’ current server room, which had
sufficient air conditioning for our relatively small number of physical servers but did not have
backup generators to keep equipment running during a power outage.
