The advantage of the family group diagnostic meeting is that it allows a group to participate in generating the data necessary to identify its own strengths, weaknesses, and problem areas. The use of a process consultant is helpful but not essential. A key issue, however, is making certain that the participants recognize that their primary objective is to identify problems rather than to solve them. As Beer has noted, “All the advantages of direct involvement are inherent in this model, although there may be limited openness if the group has had no previous development and a supportive climate does not exist.
