Filtrationsystemsusedintechnicalandmedicalapplicationsrequirecomponentsforfine particledeepfiltrationtobehighlyefficientandatthesametimeairpermeable.Inhighefficiency filters,nonwovenmeshes,whichshowincreasedperformancebasedonsmallfiberdiameters (e.g.,usingnanofibers),canbeusedasfineparticlefilterlayers.Nanofibernonwovenmeshes madebyelectrospinningofspidersilkproteinshavebeenrecentlyshowntoexhibitrequired filterproperties.Needle-basedelectrospinning,however,islimitedregardingitsproductivityand scalability.Centrifugalelectrospinning,incontrast,hasbeenshowntoallowmanufacturingof ultrathinpolymernonwovenmeshesinanefficientandscalablemanner.Here,continuousroll-to-roll productionofnonwovenmeshesmadeofrecombinantspidersilkproteinsisestablishedusing centrifugalelectrospinning.Theproducedspidersilknanofibermeshesshowhighfilterefficiency inthecaseoffineparticulatematterbelow2.5µm(PM2.5)andalowpressuredrop,resultingin excellentfilterquality.
