Kranuan is a remote village located in Isan, northeastern region of Thailand. Having a foreign husband (ฝรั่ง) helps to increase own status. Fon, 21 years old young lady, is back to her village. Fon has an English boyfriend. One of the villagers helps ladies to read and write emails in English to foreign boyfriends. The writer comments that women give pleasure to men, so men give them money. Without money there is no love. Every household needs money. Fon had a son when she was 17 years old. There are no laws in Thailand to force fathers to be responsible of their offsprings and pay education pension or help out. Fon wishes to offer her son a better life that she got. Some other women in the village have already a foreign husband. All have big houses or nice houses that are in sharp contrast with the shacks or basic wooden houses. It creates some kind of emulation to get the same among local girls (การเลี้ยงแบบ). This Britain's Channel 4 documentary shows the Isan village life. It shows the women side through the eyes of local working girls as they speak directly in Thai language. Molam music is often played in background. A local karaoke is present in the village. Lek is the main lady singer, being 32 years old and still single. Lek decides to hunt for a foreign husband as local men are really very poor. Some ladies have to become fed up with Thai men (เสียความรู้สึกกับผู้ชายไทย) before they can think about a foreign husband. Some women such as Lek become members of dating websites for friendship or more. Some ladies having children already and facing financial difficulties (มีลูกแต่ไม่มีแฟน) consider non Thai men. Lek has no proper job but spends half of her budget to find a foreign husband. Some ladies need to go back to work in Bangkok and leave their children with their grandparents. Even Fon's son doesn't call her 'mum' as she is not the one educating him everyday. Fon has to go back to Bangkok to earn a living until her English boyfriend gives news. Working ladies have to reach a quota every month. They get 3500 baht salary a month but need to get 60 ladies drinks and go 5 times with customers. They have to pull in customers to the bar. They give respect (ไหว้) to Buddhist statue before entering in the bar. Prostitution is outside the bar and between the girl and her customer. Bar fine is paid to the mamasan (มาม่าซัง). Fon’s boyfriend has paid a special fee so she doesn’t have to go with customers anymore. Fon has dreams to go to England and keeps in touch with her boyfriend through Skype. Finally Lek decides to come to Bangkok to work as a bar girl hoping to make money to support her two kids and to find a husband. She gets recommendation by another lady villager already working there. She is worried about customers’ (แขก) behavior. Anyway the mamasan seems to accept anybody and promises she should find a husband within a year! Fon is very upset as her English boyfriend didn't call her since two days. As there are no customers, girls are upset and fight together. Lek decides it is not her world and goes back to her village. Fon now stays in the village waiting for visa paper to be able to go to England. Lek still works in the village local karaoke and still tries her luck with dating websites. There is even a Thai best foreign husband competition in the village! In 2011, a new romantic movie (อี นางเอ๊ย เขยฝรั่ง - White Buffalo) was released. It looks why Isan women are choosing foreign husbands over local men
