The contribution of the MIOX pathway to AsA concentration in Citrus fruit may be restricted to immature stages, being less important at latter maturation stages [9]. In fact, the maximum accumulation of the mRNA corresponding to MIOX gene was attained in immature fruits at the time of shading (July), decreasing thereafter and did not present any differences between light- and dark-exposed fruits (Fig. 3B and 4B). Then, the myo-inositol biosynthetic pathway is unlikely to be involved in the stimulation of AsA concentration by light during ripening. Similarly, this route may be of marginal relevance in AsA accumulation in kiwifruit [53].
