As the consolidation of the sand mold around the flange progresses by the thrust of the casting contraction, the sand mold remote from the flange becomes effective at restraining the further contraction of the casting. Therefore, a greater restraint force from the sand mold is exerted on the casting. However, the strength of the casting is so high that only elastic deformation accumulates below 250 ◦C (Fig. 7(b) 3)).
