Children’s exploration of music and movement through inquiry
For one month last winter, the children we teach engaged in a rich, collaborative learning experience about music and movement. It began after the winter holiday, when a child brought in three paper grass skirts left over from party. The child’s family thought the class might be able to use them. Little did they realize those skirts would be the catalyst for the biggest self-directed inquiry the children would experience-our dance-focused paper shoes inquiry, a mane inspired by a child’s insightful comment during the experience. The project would explore the ways in which engaged in the process of making art is more powerful for young children than creating a final art product.
